Shaving with sensitive skin is a challenging ordeal. It sucks to get raw reddish skin after shaving that’s not only painful but ugly. Choosing the best electric shavers for sensitive skin can help a great deal. But let’s start from an important question: do electric razors for sensitive skin really work? Should you even use sensitive skin electric shavers in the first place?
I believe that an electric shaver for sensitive skin causes less irritation in general. I know this from personal experience as well as many interviews with friends and colleagues who have sensitive skin that get raw easily or acne-breakout prone skin. A manual razor will give you a much closer shave but it scrapes across the surface of your skin and the resulting razor drag causes irritation.
An electric shaver cuts away hair from your face and neck without scraping away the top layer of your skin. When used correctly, they can definitely prevent any redness, razor bumps or breakouts. That is not to say that they are perfect for sensitive skin but the best electric shaver for sensitive skin is designed with features that minimize irritation and redness. Learning how to choose the best electric razor for sensitive skin is an important matter, especially if you have tried other electric shavers and found them to be too harsh for your skin.
To begin with, first understand that if you are new to electric shaving, you will have to take some time to get used to the whole process. Many have suggested that your skin takes at least 3 weeks to get acclimated to electric shavers, especially if you have never used them before.
The razor bumps or rashes you see when you first use an electric shaver might be part of the whole naturalization process. Stick with the sensitive skin electric shaver for a few weeks before declaring that it doesn’t work for you. Trust me, this will save you grief in the long run.
Choosing the Best Electric Razor for Sensitive Skin
When selecting the best electric razors for sensitive skin, you mainly have two options: foil shaver or rotary shaver. A foil shaver has a long strip of metal with holes for a shaving head while a rotary shaver has circular shaving heads that are sometimes elevated. Some people prefer foil shavers while others prefer rotary shavers.
In general, I think foil shavers provide a closer shave although rotary shavers perform better when it comes to the contours of your skin, such as your neck. Both will work equally well for your needs if you’re looking for a sensitive skin electric razor that works. If you are completely new to electric shavers, you might want to test both types of shavers by either buying both a foil and rotary shaver or borrowing shavers from friends.
If you would rather just go with one type of shaver, I would recommend a rotary shaver simply because I think it shaves the neck area better than foil shavers too. Rotary shavers also have some special features which make them useful for sensitive skin. I’ll talk more about this in the paragraphs below.
Wet Shaving Helps Prevent Sensitive Skin Irritation
If you have very sensitive skin, I recommend getting a wet/dry electric shaver so you can possibly use it under the shower or use it with some shaving foam or cream. If I’m in the mood to shave under the shower with a wet/dry shaver, I’ll use something like the Proraso Shaving Soap in combination with a solid wet/dry electric shaver.
Some of the best mens electric razors for sensitive skin come with built-in lotion dispensers which ooze out shaving gel while you shave. Super convenient if you don’t want to mess around with gels or soaps and just want to do it all with a shaver.
The most popular mens electric shaver for sensitive skin is either the Philips Norelco 8020X Moisturizing Shaving System or Philips Norelco Nivea for Men Electric Razor. Both of them come with a built-in moisturizing dispenser and can be used in the shower. Here are some descriptions of both shavers. Click on the product names to read my full review of each one.
The Nivea electric shavers are pretty decent and I really love how smooth my face feels after using them. The only downside of it is that you will have to buy the Nivea lotion cartridges, which is an additional cost but if this electric shaver works for your sensitive skin, its well worth the money spent.
Moisturizing Your Skin Helps – Use a Shaving Oil or Cream
Your skin is less likely to be irritated when it is well moisturized and prepared for the shaving process. You do not want to shave dry if you have sensitive skin. Personally, I like to use a shaving oil instead of a cream or foam because it allows the blades to glide over the skin more smoothly and you don’t have to deal with lather (although that may be more luxurious when done in the shower).
Shaving oils also mean that you don’t really need to wash after you finish, just wipe dry with a tissue if you’re in a rush to leave the house and don’t want to get wet again. My preferred shaving oil of choice is the Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort Pre-Shave Oil. If you’re into an all-natural, paraben-free alternative, try the Bath By Bettijo Silky Shaving Oil. A cheaper option that I also enjoyed is the popular King of Shaves – Kinexium Shaving Oil. All of them are fantastic on the skin. Just a few drops on your face and you can shave away without any problems.
After shaving, you may want to use a good after-shave moisturizer to calm down your skin. Just make sure that it is non-comedogenic so it doesn’t clog your pores. I also prefer to use an after-shaver moisturizer that is fragrance-free and alcohol-free because I find that alcohol is too drying. I also don’t want the scent of the moisturizer to conflict with my cologne.
I highly recommend the Nivea for Men Sensitive After Shave Extra Soothing Balm. Alcohol and fragrance free, this product uses chamomile & vitamins in a very comforting cream that spreads easily without being too thick and heavy. Excellent stuff.
All in all, I hope this article on using the right electric shavers for sensitive skin has been helpful. Remember to use a pre/post shaving oil or cream alongside with the recommended electric shavers above and I’m pretty sure you’ll get a fantastic shave they won’t irritate your skin.
